Warrior |
|
Mark Says: Good bright shot, well exposed. Good colour to the sky. I wonder why the picture wasn’t taken from the railings – as the top of the mast is in the trees and the rails are not adding anything. |
Jess Says: Good marks
for getting the complete ship with all masts. The overhead branches
are a bit of a distraction as is the bottom rail, but a very good
effort. |
| History |
|
Mark Says: Um. Not sure. I like the idea – but it’s a little too flat with little contrast – and its difficult to read the graffiti. |
Jess Says: It took me
a few moments before I twigged this one. Nice clear image with enough
imagination to see this, but I find it a bit lacking in interest. |
| Snow
Work Today |
|
Mark Says: Again, a good idea, but the snow is a little overexposed, and the shot generally lacks contrast. |
Jess Says: Snow is a
difficult commodity to photograph. Most of this image has a lot of
blown out areas. A little more care in the exposure and a little sharper
image would have worked better. |
| Trieste Habour |
|
Mark Says: I like this shot, could perhaps do with a little more
lightness to the mid-tones around the buildings. There is a good reflection
in the water. I think the sky is a little bit too blown over too much
area. The photographer also needs to make sure the water is level. |
Jess Says: Lots of interest
in this scene, nicely detailed. It is a pity the sky to the right
is blown out as it also spoils the otherwise good water reflection,
good effort. |
| Birdman
- WINNER |
|
Mark Says: I like this shot too. The B&W works well. I would have liked to have seen a bit more space to the right of the man – so he has something to look into. |
Jess Says: Nicely detailed
and good conversion to B/W. A slightly faster shutter speed might
have given more detail to the open wings of the birds. Good composition
with the man looking away from the camera. Well done. |
| Red
flower |
|
Mark Says: I see someone has been playing! In some ways this shot looks like it should be brighter than it is. And the blue background is not even around the flower. There is no excuse for that! |
Jess Says: Exceptionally
good colour saturation and detail. A tighter crop and a move away
from dead center would have worked better with the composition. Good
effort. |
| Alley
Cat |
|
Mark Says: This is a shot
that has worked well for me. The cat, in the bottom third, is walking
into the shot and the path gives it somewhere to go. The verticals
look good to me too. |
Jess Says: A lovely composition,
the path leads right into the frame, colour and detail are good. The
cat is a bonus. Very well done. |
| African
Lions - WINNER |
|
Mark Says: This is my first shot. The sky has been changed in this
shot, but the mane around the lions head has been lost a little. I’ve
since re-done it with a much better result. Also the sky is too sharp
for the DOF. |
Jess Says: Great composition
with the delightful family scene. I am still not sure about the sky
but overall a very good image with good colour and detail. |
| Gull |
|
Mark Says: Despite the size of the bird in this shot, it works very
well. It is perfectly composed on the thirds and the sun coming through
the clouds is excellent. |
Jess Says: Good sky indicating
perhaps a storm, the foreground is quite dark and I do have a bit
of difficulty as why this is called The Gull. The bird is so indistinct
that is could be any type of bird. Good try at a silhouette that does
not quite work. |
| Abbey
Fields Pumping Station |
|
Mark Says: This is my second one. |
Jess Says: A great image,
clean with crisp details, edge to edge sharpness. My only nit pick
is the wall at the extreme right and the blown out light. Very nicely
done. |
| Dawn
Riders |
|
Mark Says: This is a very moody shot and another one that I like.
This is getting to be a habit! |
Jess Says: A good imaginative
scene, the fence leads the eye into the frame and the riders in the
mist are nicely placed. A bit sharper image would have been better. |
| The
Archers |
|
Mark Says: Whilst this is a generally a good shot, it would have
been even better if the photog had changed position slightly and composed
it so that the last column was at the other edge of the frame –
keeping the diagonal line. |
Jess Says: Good perspective
but once again a bit soft. A tighter crop on the right would have
eliminated some of the distracting background. Images like this need
to be crisp and sharp to bring out all the details, I suspect a deeper
DOF would have worked better. |
| Snow
Drops in Glass - SECOND |
|
Mark Says: This is composed very well, three flowers, the vase in the bottom third, the flowers towards the top. Excellent. |
Jess Says: This is mine
so no comment |
| Board
Walk - THIRD |
|
Mark Says: This is an excellent shot, the walk disappearing round the corner leads the viewer farther in. The sky has some good detail in and the background complements the foreground detail. |
Jess Says: Mine so no
comment |
| Red
Kite |
|
Mark Says: The shot of the bird is very good, but I think it would have been better if it had been cropped square to remove some of the slightly distracting background. |
Jess Says: Excellent
detail especially the eye which in close-up bird photography is very
important. A bit too much room at the top but a very good composition
with the head slightly turned. Very well done. |
| alstromeria |
|
Mark Says: The exposure is spot on in this shot. The symmetry works really well. Great shot. |
Jess Says: Very good
detail and colour in the blossoms, lighting is good but the dead central
placement detract from good image. A tighter crop would have worked
better. |
| Untitled |
|
Mark Says: The conversion to B&W hasn’t worked for me. The cross in the foreground is well placed though. |
Jess Says: Interesting
subject, the shadows do distract and the B/W conversion could use
a little more contrast, would have liked to see this in colour. |
| Grand
Canal view in Trieste |
|
Mark Says: Another good shot. Well exposed, sky is very good, although
I’m not sure it was the one as shot. |
Jess Says: Outstanding
image, excellent clarity and colour. Good composition with depth and
edge to edge sharpness. Well done. |
| Frozen
Leaves |
|
Mark Says: This is a good idea, but lacks something. I think the something is a focal point. The lighting is also a little flat. |
Jess Says: Excellent
detail and good composition, one can really feel the frost. Well done. |
| Cavalier
King Charles |
|
Mark Says: This shot needs more contrast I think. It seems a little washed out somehow. Also a little unbalanced. |
Jess Says: Nicely set
up image of a lovely dog. Cloning out the leash at the top would have
been a plus, nicely done. |
