December 2009 Theme Competiton Entries

Theme is The Hidden World

Crits by Mark and Ron

At the Bottom of my Garden

Mark Says: Get lower! That was my first thought when I opened this one up. The view point is too ordinary. The fairy fading into the background is possibly un-necessary for the theme. The red flowers are a little too dominant.

Ron:A nice fairy and flower shot with some nice colour but, it’s a pity about the brown pots. Removing them would have made the photo better.

Barn Owls

Mark Says: Nice take on the theme. Owls are a little central and not as sharp as I’d like. Possibly due to a cropped image or high Iso causing the softness. Not sure if the brightness in the foreground is due to the bars of the cage or something else, but does spoil the picture a little.

Ron:There is a lot of mist which distracts from the owls plus one or two bright spots in the back ground. The photo on my screen seems a bit bland.

Beneath Deansgate

Mark Says: Good use of perspective in another good take on the theme. Watch the levels though – the beams on the roof are drifting off horizontal. Might be lens distortion – because the floor looks to be going the other way. Like the colour tones though.

Ron:A shot that is well executed and with  nice colour. You get a real sense of being hidden and lonely.

Beneath the Snow

Mark Says: Sorry, but I can’t see the point of this image! The twig in the foreground is distracting. I’m looking really hard to see what’s under the bracken! Exposure is good though.

Ron:A good idea that for me has not worked as well as it as it could have. The snow on the right is a bit blown plus the branch across the top is distracting.

Black Hole

Mark Says: I’ve no idea how this was taken, but is an interesting view of the sky! Not a winner for me, as it’s too soft.

Ron:This looks like a real black hole, or at least what I think one would look like. The lighting is just right. There is an overall softness to this as if the focus is a little out, all which adds to the effect.

From the Hidden World we Watch

Mark Says: Looks like some heavy dodging/burning (I can never remember which way round it is!) has been done to this image and to good effect. I would have liked both eyes to have been as bright and big as each other.

Ron:My one so no crit

Hermits Cave

Mark Says: Nice use of perspective once again. The lights taking the viewer into the image and the hole at the end of the path.

Ron:Well light and nice colour balance. The fore ground candle is a bit bright and it may not really be needed. No sign of the hermit.

Hidden Art

Mark Says: The concept of this one is good and does fit the theme well. However, the art is a little weak for me! Dynamic range is a little large to really work.

Ron:The way the art disappears into the tunnel and darkness works well. I like the hard sharp edged shadow running up and through the shot.

Hidden World of My PC

.Mark Says: Nice close up of the motherboard, good exposure. Good lighting. No real focal point in the image though.

Ron:This is a good close up, it is pin sharp, good colour as well as interest. It’s just to clean to be you pc innards.

Hidden World of the Homeless

Mark Says: Nice conversion to black and white, Composition is excellent with the man well positioned in the frame giving some space and idea as to the place he has chosen for his bed. I’m always uncomfortable taking these sort of shots, so due respect to the TOG.

Ron:A good candid of a person begging. I like the titles on the books and also the sign behind him. For me they add some thing to this that has lifted it a bit

Ice Crystals

Mark Says: Good macro of the ice.  I like the short DOF leaving the background nicely out of focus. I’m not sure if it is black and white or colour – but doesn’t really matter!

Ron:A good macro shot that shows ice crystals in all their glory. The crystal on the left is good and could stand on its own, try a crop and see.

In the Pod

Mark Says: Love this one. The rim lighting showing off the “hairs” on the pod and stalk. Colours are super and contrast nicely with the black background.

Ron:A great use of light as shows the hidden seeds within the pod. This is a well executed shot and pin sharp.

Is There Anybody There?

Mark Says: Good clean shot. Background is nice. I think I might like the face to be a little brighter – the ball (Photo shopped in?) is a little too prominate – the face should still be the main focal point, in my opinion.

Ron:I love the way this is light and the colours. Those added to the expression on her face makes this a great photo. Maybe tone down the light areas, bottom fore ground just a tad.

It's a Hidden World

Mark Says: Um, sorry this is another one that I just don’t get. No focal point in the picture.

Ron:This is a good shot with nor even a hint of what is hidden behind the wall. A little more balance in the light on the bricks may have looked a little better.

Orion Nebula

Mark Says: I’d like to see the blacks being, well, black! The nebula is nicely composed though. Again, not a winner for me.

Ron:One of those shot that make me say well done, then I wonder why, as I have no idea if it is or not.

For this reason I can only say it has appeal.

The Rockpool

Mark Says: The shell is a good focal point, but the picture is overall very even in brightness it is getting slightly lost.

Ron:The colours are well done as they show a good range of hues which blends the rest of the items together. The scallop has a little bit of it just a tad to light for me.

Vampire Maiden

Mark Says: A good idea, and a fair bit of time has been spent setting it up. However, the coffin is a bit too hidden – it took me a few seconds to work out where the vampire was coming from – looked disembodied!

Ron:Not a subject I like, this one is a bit static, no life to it. Not for my taste.

Vampire Sleeps

Mark Says: Sorry this doesn’t do it for me. Nice record shot of the hearse, but not much more.

Ron:Another Vampire theme or at least his mobile home. Some areas of this have good light but they are let down by the areas that have not.

Waves

Mark Says: Some good angles, but not really convinced this meets the theme though. The girls paddle is chopped off, as is the back of the canoe.

Ron:Great action shot that has shown some hidden facts and views. I like the colours of this one.

What the Butler Saw

Mark Says: Clever use of the keyhole, but the picture doesn’t say to me Butler, or what he saw! Exposure of the face is good though.

Ron:Nice one with the eye well placed and in sharp focus. The eye colour and catch lights are also good.

Where's my Feet?

Mark Says: Yes, well, what can you say? Exposure of the snow is a little hot – not a lot of detail – that or the light is flat and not giving any definition.

Ron:A good self portrait shot of “feet” This is a good idea and just a little different.
I would like to se a copy of it where the legs were on the bottom so that it became a landscape.

Who Goes First?

Mark Says: The head of the man with the hat has been cut off. No real focal point, except the hole in the ground – which is legitimate. I feel that the shot would have been better if the photographer had been a bit lower – the impression is that we are looking down at the workmen.

Ron: A good candid shot of workmen doing what they do best. There are a few little bits of the slabs that have lost definition by being to light.
