June 2010 Open Competition Entries

Crits this month are by Alan C and Big__Col

Aqualegia

Aqualegia – Nicely framed image with good use of DoF to throw any background distractions completely out of focus.  This is a nice flower image but can’t help thinking it may be a touch underexposed, the colours don’t seem to be as vibrant as they perhaps should.

Alan C says
Technically very good with beautiful colour rendition

Burbage Brook

Burbage Brook – Good selection of shutter speed to get a sense of the action of the water and fairly well exposed.  I do, however, find the untidy branch/twigs on the right of frame distracting, not sure if a slightly different shooting position was possible to avoid the overhanging vegetation.

Alan C says
This is nice,it has a dreamy, peaceful qulaity abot it,Good slow shutter speed work here to get the “cotton wool” effect on the flowing water

Dovestones Reservoir

Dovestones Reservoir – Nice scene that suits the “vintage treatment” applied and the sepia tones work pretty well.  Just a pity the three modern cars can be seen so clearly at the side of the building.  The light vignette works fairly well but personally I would have liked it to be a touch more subtle.  Good work though.

Alan C says
This has a dreamy “olde worldee” feel to it and I l;ike the vignetting on the corners.Unusual and interesting approach – I wonder what it would look like in sepia?

Eagle Alighting

Eagle Alighting – Impressive shot and kudos for “capturing the moment”.  Great action shot of a majestic bird.  I am going to be brutally honest here though, the selective colour treatment just kills the image for me.  I know this is a personal thing but I would have much rather this image was all colour or all b&w.

Allan C says
Say what you like this picture has impact.I am no wildlife photographer but  this is, I guess just about as good as they come

Gone to lunch

Gone to Lunch – This doesn’t really work for me.  It is a good record shot of a nice bike but doesn’t really say much more to me.  Can’t help thinking the composition could have been more dynamic and avoidance of cutting off the screen would have helped.

Alan C says
This is one of mine so I'll pass on this one

Goosander

Goosander – Nicely captured but the bird looks to be out of focus.

Alan C says
This is OK ,exposure and focus are both about right and I do like the ripples which give a sense of movement across the water

Little Moreton Hall

Little Moreton Hall – I like this.  Well composed and good play with light.  I particularly like the colourful light cast at the lower left of the frame.  The exposure looks to have been well controlled under what looks to be difficult conditions.  The book or folder on the bench also adds a bit of interest (I wondered if a seated person would have lifted the image further?).  Great work.

Alan C says
Shooting interiors against the light is not the easiest of tasks. This has been well handled here and I do like the shadows falling on the floor as this gives good balance to the picture

Llama

Llama – Geez a kiss!!  Nice close up portrait but there are a couple of aspects that let the image down.  The composition would have been better if the eyelashes had not been severed at left of frame and more of the bottom lip was included.  The animals face also looks a bit soft, not sure if this is down to slight movement and a long lens?

Alan C says
I really cannot see anything in this picture other than a mass of hair,a nose and 2 black sockets for eyes – sorry

Not so Busy Bee

Not so Busy Bee – Very well captured.  Great pose and he sure does look a lazy sod.  Can’t really fault this one – nicely exposed, nice bokeh/DoF, well framed and very sharp.  Cracking image.  Stand out favourite of mine.

Alan C says
excellent macroc shot, any crit would be pointless

One man and his tripod

One Man and His Tripod – sorry but this one does nothing for me.  Looks underexposed, not quite a silhouette and not enough detail to work for me.

Alan C says
Sillhouette shot – have not seen one of these for a long time. This is well handled and just goes to prove that good pictures are available even under poor light conditions, you just need a little imagination

Rushup Edge

Rushup Edge – Nice landscape with interesting sky and some hikers on the path to add another dimension.  Not sure if it is due to upload resolution but it looks a touch noisy, perhaps oversharpened?  Good image though.

Alan C says
Attractive landscape,I am a bit bothered about the horizon bisecting the picture vertically and also the main elements of the picture are in the centre of the frame rather than on the thirds

Sacred

Sacred – Very nice image, lovely sunburst through the trees and a lovely golden glow.  Good point of view with the grave tablets (don’t know what else to call them) giving the image context.

Alan C says
Nice touch here, the author has elected to take this shot contra jour [into the light],but, for me the sun is just a little too glaring,a viewpoint slightly to the right might have shielded the sun behind the trees

Salford Quays

Salford Quays – This is a shot with a lot of potential but it just looks too soft.  Not sure if it would have been better with the sun slightly lower in the sky.  Good effort.

Alan C says
This is a contra jour shot and I am bound to say that it does not work for me, in fairness to the Auther these shots are difficult in the extreme so well done for trying it.

Swan

Swan – Nice portrait shot.  These blighters are hard to expose correctly and you have done well here.  Nicely framed and sharp where it needs to be.  Just losing focus at tip of beak.

Alan C says
Competent picture, clear and crisp, background nicely out of focus

The Look

The Look – Yup that is a very sultry look.  Well captured.  Good pose, background nicely oof, and looks to be well exposed.  Difficult to tell if the eyes are pin sharp at this resolution but looks a good portrait to me.  The tones look like they could do with a contrast boost.

Alan C says
This seems to neither one thing nor the other – neither full length shot nor head and shoulders portrait in profile

Times Past

Times Past – Black & white conversion looks good with a nice tonal range but it does look like it could do with a boost in contrast.  B&W suits the subject well with a nice burst of light from the left side of frame.  Nice image.

Alan C says

Good monochrome study with full tonal range from white to black.I found the picture a bit overpowering, perhaps lees of the picture, but centered around the gravestones would work

Vintage Humber

Vintage Humber – Nice car, pity about the surroundings.

Alan C says
This is one of mine so I'll pass on this one

Yellow Rose

Yellow Rose – Lovely, delicate image.  The soft focus is used to good effect here and gives the image a nice feel.  A well composed and processed image.

Alan C says
This is unusual [and the better for it].I do like the rather “dreamy” effect that has been created

Young Bird

Young Bird – the subject is nice and sharp with good use of DoF to throw the background out of focus. I do find the brown area to the right of the bird a bit distracting though.  Nicely captured image.

Alan C says
Technically good, nice to see the picture taken from “the worms eye view” rather than from a higher viewpoint
