June 2010 Theme Competiton Entries

This months theme is :Red

Crits this month are by AlanC and Big__Col

Daily News

Daily News – Great idea and well executed.  This one should do well in the themed competition.

Alan C says
Novel idea, but ,for me the picture is spoiled by the mass of blurred red background

Flower Snow Globe

Flower Snow Globe – Another good idea for the theme and well executed.  Not sure if the light burst in the droplet is real or photo-shopped but that doesn’t really matter to me.  Nicely done.

Alan C says
Well this is red and in yer face, however I am struggling to find the focal point in the picture

Lady in red

Lady in Red – Great shot and definitely fits the theme.  I really like the composition on this one – nice and simple with no distractions whatsoever.

Alan C says
This is nicely seen and well executed, perhaps some wasted space at the bottom of the picture [but that's nit picking]

Out for a spin

Out for a Spin – Hmmmm.  I know it is a personal thing but I am not a fan of selective colour.  It can be effective in some images where subtle use can emphasise an element of the photograph.  This is as subtle as a brick and simply spoils what would have otherwise been a good image.

Alan C says
Nice to see something unusual,I don't know how it was done,so I'll just say monchrome with applied colour. The car is largely in shadow – fill flash might help and the monochrome background looks as though it might have been oversharpened

Petals

Petals – Good idea and nicely photographed.  A difficult one to critique to be honest.  Not sure if the complexity of the design is a disadvantage, perhaps less would have given more?

Alan C says

Nice little, uncomplicated still life. However,I find the lighting a bit uneven

Poppies

Poppies – This is a nice photograph and looks to have been well executed.  Some nice interest in the sky, a very popular subject/scene.

Alan C says
A worms eye view shot, nice to see a different approach to this popular subject.I am not so sure about the red poppies being set against a blue sky co potential colour harmony problem [ yellow works with blue better than red ] but red works well with green

Red at night

Red at Night – Beautiful red sky and a well composed scene.  Good work.

Alan C says
Excellent composition, very well executed shot – any crit would be pointless

Red Building Site

Red Building Site – Not really working for me.  The narrow framing and busy nature of the image seem to fight against one another.

Alan C says
I will get this over quickly. This picture does nothing for me – sorry

Red but Green

Red but Green – Good idea for the theme but has been taken in very difficult lighting conditions and as such is overexposed in areas.

Alan Csays
This is one of mine so I will pass on this one

Red Fruit

Red Fruit – Definitely fits the theme well but the image looks quite a bit underexposed to me.  I am not sure that the texture of whatever the fruit is sitting on works here.  Perhaps a smoother and lighter surface would have worked better.

Alan C says
Nice idea using a collection of red fruit to set up a still life. But,oh dear the picture is well underexposed. The Exif data is very limited and gives no indication that an exposure compensation facility exists.Plain fact is that you need to get more light into this picture – don't be tempted to use flash, you will get harsh shadows..If you don't have exposure compensation on your camera [and you need + 3 or4 EV's] then I suggest that you take this type of picture outdoors in good natural light – try botth morning and early evening and see which light characteristics suits you best

Red Hair

Red Hair – Wow now that is a striking image.  Great pose, beautiful model and the red hair is fantastic.  Really like this one.  One of my faves.

Alan C says
Full marks for innovation and meeting the crirteria for the competition.Howver, the picture, from the pictorial standpoint is flat,it needs some other element in there to give it a lift

Red Panda

Red Panda – Good wildlife shot but the tones and colour look like they could do with a boost in photoshop.

Alan C says
Cute little fella but I think you have far too much foliage in the picture which is very distracting.Don't be afraid ti crop the picture so as to draw the eye into the main subject or,better stiil, wghen taking the picture frame it using the zoom so that your main subject is more prominent

Red Posy

Red Posy – Good still life that fits the theme.  Perhaps a different viewpoint and different lighting could have made the overall composition more dynamic through the use of shadows?

Alan C says
Nice little still life, exposure and focus well handled.Just a pity that the glass container blends into the background

Red Racer

Mallory Park – Nicely panned action shot of a vintage race car.  Well taken with some nice speed blur in the background.

Looks like a panned shot, never easy but this is very well done with the focus and exposure well controlled

Red Robin

Red Robin – Well taken wildlife shot that is nice and sharp with a lovely DoF and well composed.

Alan C says
Very niceely positioned shot, crisp and clear with background out of focus

Red Rose

Red Rose – again the selective colour doesn’t work for me – not subtle enough.

A lot of thought has been put into the set up for this still life resulkting in an attractive composition.I do,however, have one reservation – the lighting, too stromg on the white vase and not strong enough on the red rose

Red sky in the morniing

Red Sky in the Morning – Nice treescape with a lovely red glow from the rising sun.  I like the sunburst through the trees and the shadows cast from the sun.  Overall a pleasant image.

Alan c says
Tricky stuff this – contra jour work. The sun is producing an annoying glare,if you had moved about 1 metre to the right you would have got the sun behind the foliage of a tree thus reducing the glare. That,of course is easy to say just sitting here looking at the picture,I realise that other factors may be involved

Red Tower

Red Tower – can’t help thinking the image is leaning to the right and to be honest the tower doesn’t look very red at all.

Alan C says
Well there certainly is a red tower in the picture plus a great deal of  other stuff, this makes the picture very “fussy” and draws the eye away from the main subject [the tower].I suggest that some judicious cropping is needed here

Red Tractor

Red Tractor – Good image but looks a tad soft.  May be down to the resolution required for upload to the site?

Alan C says
Plenty of red in this one.The title suggests that the tractor is the subject but it forms a small part of the opicture.Howver the red patterns on the field are well captured

Sea Anenome

Sea Anenome – I presume this was taken through glass and if so it has been handled very well.  An interesting subject for the theme.

Alan C says
Most unusual and original shot, clearly meets the theme and technically good I do,however, find the profusion of white specks [pebbles ??] rather distracting

Town Crier

Town Crier – Nearly made me cry!!  Another example of what I deplore about selective colour.  This just doesn’t work for me on any level.

Alan C says
This is one of mine so I will pass on this one

Wild Poppy

Wild Poppy – Lovely image.  Really like the soft and delicate nature of the processing.  Beautiful DoF and good use of the thirds.  One of my faves.

Alan C says
This is nice, the main subject is crisp and clear and set against an out of focus background. The colour harmony is good too with the red set against a greenish backdrop

Woollies

Woolies – Good record shot of a national institution that has gone bust.  The derelict nature of the sign tells a story and highlights the fragility of businesses in current times.  The image itself looks a touch noisy (high ISO?).

Alan C say
Well the red is there, even if it is a bit mucky. For me,however, the picture has little merit
