Aged |
Iain Says:- Great detail and conversion to monochrome. However it does nothing for me. Not sure what it is, but it says nothing. Sorry.
|
Di says - Nice detail in a tree trunk. Needs a tad more contrast, pehaps in levels or curves. I find myself looking round the shot for a good focal point, and can't seem to find one though.

At Home |
Iain Says:- It could be a promo shot for Land Rover. Great detail and balance. One thing though. This Discovery is FAR too clean for the enviroment….. |
Di says - Blimey, that looks a bit clean, and you can't see the driver... is it a remote control? Good environmental shot for LandRover. Nice detail and good use of DOF

Bluetit |
Iain Says:- An action/nature image that is oh so close to being a great shot. Apart from the focus being out a bit, it is a shame that the bird did not have its wings out. Maybe putting the camera in drive would have got the perfect shot. Good effort though. |
Di says - So near yet so far.... nearly brilliant. The birds head looks in focus, but there's too much in the shot that isn't. A technique I'd keep working on, it's so nearly there. |

Racecar |
Iain Says:- Interesting image. Good detail and I like the gravel coming out of the “paper”. I’m not sure about the background colour as it matches the gravel of the road too much. Still, a nice image and great post processing. |
Di says - one of my shots. The weather has been so rubbish this month, that I've taken to re'learning photoshop. This is one of my first experiments with out of frame processing.

Castle Acre Priory |
Iain Says:- Interesting HDR shot with plenty of detail. However to give the image balance I would crop a small amount of the grass at the bottom as it does not add to the shot.
|
| Di says - HDR - something else I'm going to get around to whilst the weather is rubbish. This has been done very well - you see so many BAD HDR attempts, but this is far from that. It's been well processed, and the colours are not too saturated. Very well done. I suspect this will do well this month. |

Chatham Dockside |
Iain Says:- Great composition and the colours are great. The boats lead the eye into the shot and the tower. However the image seems a little soft. But that maybe the website.
|
Di says - Great colours, soft light, well balanced - good crop. Need I say more ?

Closed |
Iain Says:- Another fun shot. “no-one to ask?” but the place is closed. Well spotted. Technically the image seems a little underexposed and flat. However, it is well caught.
|
Di says - well spotted shot. Perhaps a tad dark, maybe increase the exposure a little. Great fun shot.

Getting out of the rain |
Iain Says:- Nice composition. However the conversion has made the image a little flat. Increasing the exposure and using curves would give the shot more impact.
|
Di says - a grey day, in the rain - very atmospheric. The moment has been captured very well. I wish he was jumping over a puddle though rather than just running. |

Hell for leather |
Iain Says:- Great sports shot. Perfect blur and well framed. Could do well |
Di says - Fabulous shot. Well caught. Well panned. |

In the Trees |
Iain Says:- Nice action shot. A Disco in the right envirioment, and it is filthy too. Also balance is spot on, car is going from left to right, as the eye would in the image. |
Di says - this is more like it - a dirty disco in the woods. You can't see the track it's on, so it looks as though it might have just been dropped in there. Great sense of adventure. LR advertisement methinks.

Mmmmm Sweets |
Iain Says:- One of mine. This was taken at the Manchester Christmas Markets. The colours of the sweets made it too much to resist taking a shot of them. |
Di says - crikey - look at all those E numbers.. makes you hyper just looking at them. Great use of DOF, but I don't fancy eating them much.

New Born |
Iain Says:- This is one of the Grunge style images that you hear about. Not a big fan of grunge, but this shot is interesting. Great blend of colours and the “baby” is on a third and draws the eye into the image. How do you critique whether this is a good grunge shot or not, I don’t know, but I applaud the photographer for thinking of something different.
|
Di says - I'm not entirely sure I 'get' this image. I think it might have been taken through glass, and the 'baby doll' inside could I suppose represent birth, or containment in a womb.. But then it could represent a plastic doll in a case. I'm not sure, and I'm not going to guess.

Oakwood Mill |
Iain Says:- Good balance and excellent reflections. Canal leads your eye into the image right to the figure on the towpath. Not sure about the foliage in the foreground, it does not add to the image and it is out of focus. If you want foreground interest in the shot, make sure that it is in focus or it will distract rather than enhance. However, on the whole, a pleasing shot.
|
Di says - the figure in the shot makes it more interesting. Without that, it would have been not as good. As it stands, in this competition, I don't think it will do as well. Colours are a bit flat and uninteresting. Sorry.

Pack Horse Bridge |
Iain Says:- Lovely rich colours and nice blur with the water. Bridge is a third down, giving balance. However the wall bottom right grabs the eye a bit. Apart from that, could do well |
Di says - Fabulous landscape shot. Long shutter speed has softened the water, and the exposure is bob on. There's nothing about this I don't like. I bet the sky was bland which is why it's not showing.

Secret of the Gods |
Iain Says:- Fun shot, made me smile. Great exposure and balance to the image. Of course Ketchup is the Sauce of the Gods…..
|
Di says - Great commercial advertisment type shot. I'd love to know how the sauce was wedged in the cupboard. I'd send this one to Heinz, and let them use it for a large fee...... very well done. |

Three Benches |
Iain Says:- One of mine. I wanted to use a shallow DOF so that the eye is drawn in following the foreground bench to the middle bench with all its detail and bag to the side, and then to the far bench. They almost look like model benches as a result. |
Di says - great experimental shot. Love the way the DOF is shown through the three benches. I'm not sure it's a good competition entry so much as a technical shot. But well done for trying.

Three Boats |
Iain Says:- I like this. Great balance and conversion to sepia. The shot has a dreamy effect. Only thing I would say is that the detail in the boats seem to be blown out. Could do well.
|
Di says - this looks like a lightroom preset conversion. I've used this, and there is a tendency for LR to blow out bright spots, and you have to deal with them manually. The overall effect is stunning. Just watch out what's happening with the boats here.

Vyrnwy Sunrise |
Iain Says:- Excellent image. Colours are rich. Detail is there, notice the mist coming off the water? Great reflections too. Could do well.
|
Di says - love the soft colours, and the mist on the water. A beautiful, well balanced image. Could do well this month.

Waterfall |
Iain Says:- Nice waterfall, but the wall on the right intrudes too much into the image. Maybe taking the image in Portrait would have helped here? |
Di says - Good attempt at a long exposure. Perhapse the water in the centre of the shot is a little overexposed. And the wall to the bottom right intrudes too much into the shot. Maybe a crop off the bottom would help. |
