January 2011 Theme Competiton Entries

This months theme is :Snow

Crits this month are by Di and Iain

Don't forget, you can still vote even if you didn't enter the competition.

A Long Walk Home

Iain Says:- Lovely shot. Colours are superb. The photographer has really taken the effort here to take the image at the right moment. I like the title as you can see the man in the distance. One minor thing, I would clone out the branches coming into the image on the right as they distract. However, apart from that I think this is a real contender. Well done.

Di Says:- an atmospheric shot, with lots of detail front to back. I like the man in the distance, he looks cold and weary somehow. Great title. I'd have cloned out the branches to the top right of the shot - other than that a great image. One to be watched when the votes are out.

A Winters Ride

Iain Says:- Nice shot with the road leading the eye to the cyclists. Good foreground detail too. Snow has just enough detail not to be blown out. Square format adds to the effect. Could do well.

Di says- Nice shot, the figures I think are a wee bit small in the frame to justify the title. The square format works, but I think I might have been tempted to make the image fully monochrome rather than rely on the lack of colour in the scene. Good snow detal shows the exposure has been handled well.

Etherow Blackwater

Iain Says:- Great exposure and detail. River leads the eye to the bridge nicely.

Di says - Etherow is one of my favourite places, this reflects the area well. Exposure has been handled nicely. Lovely image.

First Snow

Iain Says:- Great capture and love the look on the dogs face. It’s like a small child on their first experience of snow. However the monochrome conversion has made the image a little flat and underexposed.

Di says - Good image of the little dog. Love the bit of motion blurr in the tail - showing what a good time she's having. Overall though the image looks a tad flat. Punch up the contrast a little using 'levels'. I'm sure it'll make a difference.

Horses in a Line

Iain Says:- Nice shot, correct number of horses, you need to have an odd number of subject to give the image appeal. I like the shadows as well. Line of horses leads the eye into the image. Shame that the sky is bland. Could do well.

Di says - Good to see the horses are wearing red ! Always good to get some red into a winter scene like this one. Also good to see that they posed for you too. Sky is a bit bland, but suspect that that was just how it was. It's not been a good month for photography has it?

OK - Which one of you is Shaun

Iain says:- Love the title, made me smile. Great detail and composition. Forground interest of the sheep eating from the red bucket adds to the effect. Could do well.

Di says - What a fantastic title. I'm hopeless at titles. The sheep are being co-operative, and I like the long shadows, showing probably an early morning start to a walk. The red 'feeder' works well at the front of the shot. Well done, well exposed, and well composed.

Padley Gorge

Iain Says:- One of mine.

Di says - I was with Iain when he took this shot, and can attest to the fact that is was about minus 15 at the time. Absolutely perishing. The long exposure has softened the water, and the exposure is spot on. Strong composition - did I say it was freezing cold? Lovely image.

Pendle Hill

Iain Says:- another great shot. Colours are excellent. There is so much to look at too, notice the mist down in the valley?  Panorama only adds to the image. Again Could be a contender.

Di says - fantastic dawn shot - the mist in the valley adds to the ambience. Great flowing lines, lovely soft colours - cropped to perfection. I may be looking at the winning shot here.........

Snow at Home

Iain says:- Interesting shot. You can see the flakes in the bland sky, Good compositon with the push-chair adding to the shot. You can feel the cold.

Di says - Taken outside my house - the lady pushing the pram was having a bit of a hard time. It's a grab shot, but I liked the snow coming down.

Snow Line

Iain Says :- Nice colours and a different take on the theme. Nicely balanced with the cottages in the bottom right. However I would have cropped/cloned the power lines in the foreground as they distract a bit. Also, image seems a bit noisy, even though it is ISO80. I take it this has been heavily cropped?

Di says - great mountain view. The only part I don't like are the power lines in the foreground. Maybe a bit of carefull cloning could have removed them. Otherwise the composition is good, and overall a nice image.

Snow Steps

Iain says:- Nice shot. Use of the steps leads the eye right into the image. Plenty of detail in the snow too. Could do well.

Di says - I'm not too sure about this one. It's been well handled in camera, but the steps don't lead to anything, so the whole shot sort of fizzles out. A good idea that just needed something else. Maybe a person, or dog coming down, or going up.

Snowball

Iain says:- The photographer has clearly thought outside the box here. Does it work?
Well yes and no. I love the different approach, but I think I would have preferred the car more central in the ball, which would have given it more impact. The blue haze surrounding the ball? I think it might be a little too dominant. Reflection at the bottom is great though. Kudos to the photographer for even thinking of this, and must be applauded.

Di says - it's great when you see something different. A lot of thought has gone into this, and well done to the tog who actually knew how to achieve the effect. I like it a lot, and my only niggle is that the car bonnet has taken some of the blue haze. It could do well on novelty value alone.

Snowman

Iain Says:- not sure about this one I’m afraid. Seems a little underexposed, but exposure is difficult with snow. Unfortunately the background is too fussy with both the car and wheely bins catching the eye somewhat.

Di says - It's a good idea, and well spotted. It didn't look like a planned shot. I don't like the car in the background, and I think the whole image lacks contrast.

Still Snowing

Iain Says:- Nice shot. The fence leads the eye into the image. Tree is on a third, and great detail too. I would clone out the edge of the road in the bottom right corner as it catches the eye a little.

Di says - I like this - the eye follows a nice zig zag line through the shot starting in the bottom left corner. There's something to look at all through, and both trees are on, or covering a third. There's a bit of road bottom right that could have been cloned out..... which I find just a tad distracting.

The Woods

Iain Says:- excellent detail and the trees frame the image. However it just needs something in the foreground to break the expanse of snow.

Di says - nice expanse of snow - well exposed, there is detail from front to back. The path vanishes in the centre of the shot almost, so the question I asked is - "is all that empty space needed at the front of the shot?" Try a crop to almost a letter box format. I think it works better, and makes the image stronger.

Top of Dartmoor

Iain Says:- I love the detail on the sky, but I think there is too much of it, as the snow is a little lost. I like the filter black and white though.

Di says - The sky does it for me. Full of drama, and expectation of another storm coming. Fabulous shot with masses of cold brooding. I expect Cathy and Heathcliffe to come flying over the hill. Love it.

Windswept

Iain Says:- Punchy monochrome image with plenty of detail. Wall is nicely on a third, adding to the effect. Not sure about the vignette though.

Di says - this is another that grabbed my attention at the begining of the competition. Simple composition, set on a third, fab detail in the snow - good detail in the sky. Monochrome works, and the vignette leads the eye back to the centre of the shot, where it needs to be. Fabulous.

Winter 2010

Iain Says:- Nice shot, trees on a third, as is the moon on an intersection. Good colours too. Could do well.

Di says - great pastel shades. The sky could have been a bit bland, but the moon finishes it off beautifully, and it's in exactly the right place. A fine shot.

Winter Trees

Iain Says:- One of mine. Taken near Pott Shrigley. I liked the island of trees in the sea of snow.

Di says - Great monochrome shot - lead lines are good from the tyre tracks. Well exposed. I like this one.

Wooden Top

Iain says:- great detail and colours. However the area to the left of the trunk is lost. I would have concentrated the area to the right, cropping the image at the trunk. Good effort though.

Di says - I like the detail in the tree trunk but the weakest part of the image is the top left corner, which is almost completely white. The idea is good, and maybe a crop from the left might have helped. White things, or things that attract your attention on the edges of shots, really don't help.
