August 2011 Open Competiton Entries

Crits kindly provided by Rovi and Steamy

Bateleur Eagle

Rovi says; A very handsome bird. Great detail in the face feathers, but unfortunately not enough DOF to extend to all of the beak. Maybe a really tight crop to exclude the background would concentrate the view onto the face area.

Good colour and saturation levels. Nicely in focus especially around the eye area. I find myself a little distracted by the dark area in the background, but only a minor point.

Do the Robin Hop

Rovi says;  A cute little character caught in a nice pose.

A charming shot with nice gentle humour. Well taken. The dark area at the top left draws my eye a little. Softer focus does no harm at all. Well done.

DPG Tatton

Rovi says; A thought provoking image this, almost an abstract. Even the large red triangle at the base to which my first thought was 'whats that!’ began to grow on me. If the image is viewed as an abstract then all the parts have a part to play. I spent more time looking at this image than many others, so it probably has acheived it’s purpose and maybe I have learnt something.

I  rather like this for its unusual quality and inventiveness. Good colour and for me the red areas seem to work. I might have cropped off an inch or so of the right side to remove some of the blurry area.

Dragon

Rovi says; An easier less moblie subject than the previous robin, but well posed. Dragons always make a good subject with the lovely detail that their scales and spines have.

Good exposure and focus and has some impact. Not too sure about the vignetting around the image. Perhaps it is a little too well defined and precise? A good effort though.

Earwig

Rovi says; Most people hate earwigs, but they are beautifully made. Not often photographed it is nice to see one close up and appreciate its detail.

Good macro with some impact.  Straight out of Sci-fi.!! Nice exposure with the whole insect in focus.

Eileen Donan Castle

Rovi says; Nice image with a great sky, good lines to lead the eye around.

Has a dramatic quality with a good focal point which the road takes the eye up to. The grey sky seems to suit the image. Good depth of field. The only point I have is that a figure on the road may have given a better sense of scale.

Gibson Mill

Rovi says; This looks a great photogenic place. Shame the sky was so bland on this visit. Maybe some PS tweaking could have rescued it. There is a little sky detail showing in the reflection which is the strongest part of this image.

Good exposure, composition and colour. The reflections are good as well.. The banking on the left takes the eye nicely to the mill building. The bland sky does tend to detract a little.

Kittywake and chick

One of mine.

A lovely shot well captured. Good focus and colour. Composition is also good. A possible contender.

Lady Falls

Rovi says; Maybe this fall could be more dramatic if it were larger in the frame. Very difficult to say as I have never seen it for real. I do love the light which I guess is filtered through the trees.

A well composed shot with foreground rocks giving a sense of scale. Nice reflections in the water and milky effect. However it seems a little flat somehow, especially the greenery

Marbled White Feeding

One of mine

An interesting macro shot. I find  that for me the flowers tend to overpower the subject somewhat, and compete for attention. I would like to have seen the whole butterfly if possible. Perhaps this is a case of too close a macro, if there is such a thing. None the less it is a excellent effort at photographing a very nervy subject.

Roesels Bush Cricket

Rovi says; A well taken shot of this critter with the focus on the most important area. It’s always great with this type of image to study at leisure some of the tiny details that aren’t easily scene in the field. Just a nit-pick but I think some of the background highlights could be toned down to keep the eye on the main subject.

An interesting macro shot. What strange creatures insects are !!The image has good colour and focus. I find the background a little messy but the shot does have impact.

Water

Rovi says; I’m a sucker for waterfalls, love them all. Not being blessed with many in my part of the country I am envious. This one has framed the fall with leaves nicely and the water almost rushes out of the frame towards you. I am sure I can smell the dampness of the scene.

Good colour and well composed, with an effective depth of field and milky effect.
Not too sure about a focal point however, and the image is a little ‘ busy’ for my personal taste.

Waterfall

Rovi says; This IS dramatic. A beautiful image of a beautiful place, wish I was there. Everything in just the right place

Again a well composed shot with good scale and impact. Not too sure about the focus and perhaps a touch more saturation. The separate three streams of falling water on the right add to the interest displayed in the image.
