May 2011 Open Competiton Entries

Crits kindly done by Iain and Mark

A Walk in the Mist

The figures are nicely placed in the frame, though the one is just disappearing behind the tree which does spoil it slightly.
The bank in the foreground is a bit of mess and does distract, though the trees take the eye around the frame nicely.

Iain Says:- Nice capture of the mist. It is just a shame that the people are too close to the tree. A few seconds earlier would have had them in more space, which would lead the eye into the image more. I would also crop the bottom of the image too, as it is dead space which does not add to the image. Great effort though to get that mist.

Alpine Cateract

The flow of water down the image keeps things interesting, as does the log.

The movement of the water has been captured well – not too smooth to be surreal

Iain says:- I like the composition, but somehow there is something wrong with the image. It seems that it is either heavily cropped, losing its fine sharpness, or, it is a bit of camera shake and heavily sharpened to try and counter it. It is a shame, as the image has so much potential. Sorry

Ashe

Not one of my favourites this month. Its very well executed and composed  in general, though there is a lot of headroom and empty space that I’m not sure is really adding to it.

Iain says:- I remember this being taken. Spot on colours pin sharp and great composition. Could do well

Cross Country Challenge

Nice capture, the water spray does add to the sense of movement and excitement. Like the square format too. Only crit is the people in the background.

Iain says:- What can I say about this shot. It is perfectly sharp, shows movement, good composition, spot on colours and great DOF control. You don’t work for “Horse and Hound” do you? If not, then you should! Very impressive.

Fledgling

This is one of mine. Just liked the sad little thing sat on the bench, not really moving when people walked past, though not many saw it

Iain Says:- Good shallow DOF, however, the bird is too small and central for me. Maybe a crop would have helped here?

Going Up

Nice colourful image of the barge. Possibly a wider shot with both ends of the fence would have worked slightly better.

Sides of the barge are a little dark – could have pulled those up in post

Iain says:- One of my faves this month. Great composition and colours. The boat draws the eye into the shot, where you get the locks. The canal bank has the colours of the flowers to ensure that it is not dead space. Well done.

Grasses

Not enough contrast for me – no obvious blacks. And it looks over-sharpened – though that could have been the intention. If it was, it doesn’t work for me.

Iain says:- So nearly there. I like the idea, but the monochrome seems a little flat. Maybe a boost in the contrast would enhance the shot. Good effort though.

Jo

Nice enough snap of Jo, though I would have liked to have seen all of the shadow in the frame. Colour looks a little off too. Horizon looks off even if it was like that due to an uneven shoreline.

Iain Says:- I rather like this, simple yet effective. Nice use of light and the rule of thirds. Jo is a tad too central, but that does not distrac too much from the image. Could do well.

Libellula Depressa

Needs a bit more zing. Just a little flat – and dare I say, not 100% sharp (Stem looks good)– though could be the compression for the web not doing it any favours.

Iain Says:- Great detail of the dragonfly, especially the wings. Good DOF, however is is a shame that some of the leaves are still in focus. But with Nature it is difficult to get the perfect background.

Partnachlamm Gorge

Lots of things to like in this shot. I like the sense of scale, with the people. I would have liked to have had some extra light on them to highlight them more.

Iain Says:- A nice composition, and I like the light streaming down. But again, like the Cateract, there is something odd about the image. A shame as this image would have been a winner.

Prague Waterfront

A little dark for me. And the bridge is cut off on the left, with nowhere for the boat to sail into. The B&W conversion is ok – I would have liked to have seen the colour to see why the tog had chosen the B&W route

Iain Says:- My other shot. Overcast day, so convert to B+W

Rabbit

Good composition. Nice colours and a lovely specimen.  Background has been nicely diffused by the aperature chosen.

Iain Says:- great compositon, and the eye is sharp (important). Personally, I would have preferred more punchy colours, but that is just personal preference, Well done.

Roof Angles

Good use of the triangle to create an interesting abstract. At first I was going to comment about the roof being very close to the top of the frame, but looking again I can see it was done on purpose.

Iain Says:- Nice simple shot with the top of the roof off centre. Colours are great, and the contrast is spot on. Excellent Abstract.

St Michaels Mount

My second.  A Hand held HDR take in the French one in February. I quite liked the people in the corridor – they didn’t move much which was handly!

Iain Says:- Classic HDR shot here, and yet appealing. The colours are not over saturated, and the leading lines enhance the shot. I like the people on the right too, giving the shot depth and reality. Could do well.

Sunset at the Tin Mines

Quite like this one. The colour in the sky is lovely, with almost no flare. A very slightly higher angle would have been worth trying to avoid the top of the ruin cutting into the horizon.

Iain says:- Nice balance in the compositon. And the colours are good too. Again it could do with a tad unsharp mask though. Also, it appears that there is dust on the sensor, as there is a spot on the sun reflections.

Sunset at Watermouth Bay

I love the colours in this shot, and the silhouettes of the boats, but they don’t look to be quiet sharp. Does it matter? I’m not sure TBH. The horizon is not quite straight.

Iain Says:- I am a sucker for sunsets, and the colours are great on this. Good use of exposure, making the boats black. However, I am not too sure of the soft effect in this instance. I think I would have preferred that standard sharpness to give it more impact.

The Harbour, Clovelly

Nice depth of field. Nice enough scene, but I just don’t like the treatment. Sorry.

Iain Says:- Great monochrome conversion. I also like the contrast on this image. The Blacks are Black. However I am at a loss for the focal point to draw the eye into the image. I like the square format though.

Time for Beer

Bit early for me now! I like the angle, but the beer mat has been cut off at the bottom, and there is a dark line at the top of the background by the rim. I guess it’s the wall meeting the table. But it distracts my eye.

Iain Says:- One of mine. How can you resist taking a pic of a beer with a nifty fifty wide open to get the shallow DOF? Not me!

Tin Mines

A slightly central shot if the mines. Slightly panning to the left would have taken them at bit nearer the thirds and given a bit more sea which may have demonstrated the power of the sea more.
One to go back to when the sea is angry!

Iain Says:- I like the colours and compostion, but the image seems a little soft. A touch of unsharp mask will help here.
