May 2011 Theme Competiton Entries

This months theme is :Flowers

Crits kindly done by Iain and Mark

Alpine Meadow

Few too many extraneous bits of grass and flower peeking into this shot to take it up from a snap. The title would suggest a sweeping vista, rather than a closeup

Iain says:- Nice colours and there is a lot happening in the image. The way the stalk leads the image is good.

Bluebells

Lovely bokeh. Like the fact that it is pretty much a duo tone image. The top of the nearest stem is cropped out of the frame, which is a shame.

Iain Says:- My other shot, taken in a field of Bluebells. I have tried to give the image a softness that the flowers lend themselves to.

Brain Flower

An interesting abstract image. Looks to be nice and sharp. Wouldn’t know it was a flower to be honest, which doesn’t really matter. Tittle says it all really!

Iain Says:- Nice close up abstract of an unknown flower. Certainly a different take on the theme, and the photographer must be applauded accordingly.

Buttercup Dew

Another shot with fantastic bokeh, though the depth of field on the flow is a little too shallow in places. The yellow is not really standing out. Needs some more light, particularly the right side.

Iain Says:- another great composition, and the DOF control (or Bokeh) is very creamy. I like the way the stem comes from the corner too. A nice delicate image.

Clematis

Excellent shot! Punchy strong colours, background really makes the flower stand out. Front to back sharpness is spot on.

Iain Says:- Spot on exposure, super sharp and great colours. A perfect record shot of a Clematis.

Congratulations

Looks a little under exposed. Plenty of details on the flower, but seems muted. A Little cluttered - the red flower in the top middle distracts from the main subject

Iain says:- Nice colours, but the image seems a bit fussy to me. The main flower is well composed in the image, but the pink flower in the bottom right grabs the eye a little too much.

Daisy Clover

Two of anything doesn’t make a powerful image – always try for odd numbers. Doesn’t do it for me. Exposure is ok. Background is a little busy.

Iain Says:- Great detail of the two flowers, but I would have taken it with a wider aperture to isolate the flowers from the background more.

Dew Laden Mayflower

Initial impressions are that is a lovely shot, though as you look around the image, the leaf coming into shot is distracting and I wonder if it could have been moved prior to taking the shot.

Iain says:- composition is excellent, but the dew seems a little out of focus. I do like the dew on the stem though.

Finger of Flowers

Another nice macro shot of some flower. Very abstract, but the eye does wander around the frame nicely. Like the slight angle of the stem.

Iain says:- not as good as the brain flower image, but certainly interesting. Again a different take to the theme.

Forget me nots

Never really like shots looking down, though I’m not sure how with this sort of subject anything different could have been done and still see the flower.

Full sun does make the contrast high and difficult to not blow out parts of the image

Iain Says:-  Not one for me I’m afraid. Background is too fussy. Suggest a different perspective lower down and closer to the flowers, rather than (as it appears) standing over the flowers and taking the shot.

INYA FACE

Strange name for a flower!
Good composition, strong colours, well exposed and still shows lots of details.

Iain Says:- Love the punchy vibrant colours here, and the square format enhances the shot. Well done.

Iris

Another classic flower shot, again the background making the image really stand out. I wonder if a portrait shot, with a little more stem in shot would give the head something to stand on.

Iain says:- Great colours, but, if you are going to do a still life with a plain background, ensure that the whole of the flower is in focus. The front petal is out of focus, which detracts I am afraid.

Oxeye Daisies

Too high a viewing angle, get on the floor and look up for something a little out of the ordinary and not something you normally see from walking around.

Iain Says:- The daisies seem lost in the image I’m afraid. If the photographer got closer to one of them then we may have a perfect shot. Sorry.

Pink Flower

One of mine

Taken with my 100mm f2.8ISL lens – which does make hand held shots relatively easy – and has super bokeh. The flowers are pretty much all in focus, though the stem does go away slightly – which is fine as it is not the subject

Iain Says:- A cracker! Spot on focus, excellent DOF control, and excellent colours.

Should do well

Poppies

My second.
Taken when we were in Stroud and was the field next to where we were camping. Quite liked the classic popping of the colour – which is very easy with poppies!
I quite like the nearest poppy being in focus and the main subject, with the others in the background pushing the eye back down to it.

Iain Says:- I like the selective colour as it works well. I would crop some of the bottom a bit as it does nothing to enhance the image.

Tulip

Another nice closeup – the low contrast really suiting the flower and its colouring. Nice and sharp at the top. Shame the background goes brighter at the top as it does pull the eye a little.
Good effort though.

Iain Says:- One of mine. I spotted it and just had to take a shot.
