November 2011 Theme Competiton Entries

This months theme is : Be selective about your colour

Crits by Ivor and Tom

A whiter shade of pale

Rovi says- A seasonal subject, but seems a little dull. A few tweaks could give it a brighter look and more impact.

One of  mine taken up the back of Hayfield a while back

Always look on the bright side of life

Rovi says- The Curving approach to the arch and through to the colour scene beyond makes for an image which makes me want to see more.

Probably my favourite in the Theme comp this month. Has impact and is well thought out and composed. The path leads the eye through the arch to the coloured area. Excellent shot and should do well. Only a minor point but perhaps a figure through the arch would give a sense of scale.

Beady eyes

Rovi says- One of mine.

Definitely fits the theme and the eyes are a strong focal point. Just also happens to be an excellent shot of a big cat. Menace personified. Well done.

Blackpool Prom

Rovi says- I really like the composition of the image, but feel that the selected colour areas are too small to have much impact. Maybe all the buildings leading to the tower being in colour might help

A grey image so typical of Blackpool weather. Well composed with the buildings and the steps taking the eye round to the focal point of the Tower. The people give the necessary sense of scale and the waves add movement.

Blue tit on a stick innit

Rovi says-  A handsome bird in a great pose. Does seem to be heavily cropped and sharpened to get to what we see here.

A good shot which meets the theme for me. A slightly softer focus seems not to affect the image adversely. Well captured and carries some impact

Boxes

Rovi says- A creative image with impact

Fits the theme to a tee. A technically competent, imaginative, well taken image. Composition is good.

In the frame

Rovi says- Great idea that works well. You can’t lose with children. It’s a pity that all the children are not looking at the camera.

I really like this one. Some thought has gone into the idea of the image. Inventive and imaginative. Well taken and technically competent..

Orange Sheep

Rovi says- A quick look at this image and all you see is a mono shot of a sheep loosely painted in orange. You can then dismiss it and move on, or wonder why it is done this way. I confess to spending more time viewing this image than some others therefore it has been successful.

Was it really orange? Lol. Should stand out on the hillside. Meets the theme with a vengeance and definitely carries impact.

Patriotic Girl

Rovi says- One of mine

Lovely shot matching the theme well. Rather like this. Good focus and exposure and a rather enigmatic expression.. A contender in my book.

Prague Tram

Rovi says- The red tram is in just the right place. The cables, tram lines and pavements pull the viewer in from the corners and make a well balanced composition.

Rather like this one, with a good depth of field and well composed showing some imagination. The tram is a strong focal point fitting the theme perfectly.

Red Letter Box

Rovi says- An attention grabbing graphic image helped by the strong side lighting. The red caption in the frame is a little distracting.

A shot with impact  -  vivid red against a white wall. The window on the left I find distracts a little, but good exposure and fits the theme.

Red Ratchet

Rovi says- One of mine.

Well spotted opportunity to fit the theme with some impact. Well taken and nicely exposed, with an almost abstract like quality

Red Squirrel

Rovi says-  The same comments as the Orange Sheep, but not quite as compelling.

A good attempt at a an often twitchy subject. Perhaps the subject is overshadowed a little by the box, but even so it is a very good effort. Well composed and fits the theme

Red Tram

Rovi says- An ideal subject for selective colour treatment. Makes the tram come out of the picture

Certainly stands out with some impact, with good exposure and focus. I find the figures and vehicles in the background somewhat distracting, but the subject fits the theme well
