October 2011 Theme Competiton Entries

This months theme is : Green

Crits kindly done by Mark and Iain

3 Leaves

Mark says - Quite like this one. The window is nicely positioned- just that bit higher in the frame than you might expect – but I like it.

Iain says:- lots of detail here, but like an earlier shot, the window is too central. The image would have more of an impact if the window was at the intersection of thirds.

A Fish in green tiles

Mark says - Fits the theme, though the subject is not really the green bit!
Would like it as a square crop – or put the fish on the third – its just a bit off centre now and loses a bit of power.

Iain says:- My first. Taken at Victoria baths.

A Man, A Dog and green

Mark says - Well, it’s green. Man and God provides some interest to the image, and they have lots of space to walk into, but it doesn’t do much for me.

Iain says:- Interesting take on the theme, with the subject on a third. But they seem a tad lost. Maybe a crop of around 20% around it may put the subject matter more in the frame. Nice and sharp though

Breakwater Green

Mark says - Nice angles of the breakwater – yes its green, so does meet the criteria. Quite a fast shutter, freezing the waves and water splashes.
Not sure the if a tighter or looser crop would be better – not a lot of foreground interest.

Iain says:- good action from the water over the breakwater, however it is an almost perfect shot. Personally I would have preferred it if the photographer was lower down when the image was taken, giving it a sense of scale. Still, it is an appealing image.

Green Butterfly

Mark says-Excellent take on the theme – though I’d have liked a lot closer crop – as the environment it is in, is not very interesting!
Is it me, or is there a girls face in the middle of the bottom of the wings?

Iain says:- great colours. But the background is too fussy, which makes the subject seem lost. If the photographer couldn’t get closer, maybe a crop isolating the butterfly more would give the shot more impact.

Green Combine

Mark says - Nice image, combine nicely positioning in the frame, with a decent amount of space to go into. Sky looks to have been forced a little.

Iain says:- my third (don’t forget you can have up to 3 per comp until the end of the year)
More of a grab shot whilst out on a treasure hunt. But I rather liked it.

Green Nettles

Mark says - Nice symmetrical shot of the nettles, which fits the theme. Shame the depth of field is so deep it would have been nice to isolate the top three leaves or so a little more.

Iain says:- Nice take on something that is considered a weed (and a painful one at that!)
Great detail, but again the background is a bit fussy. This is probably due to the type of camera the tog is using. I would like a crop on this emphasizing the main leaf to reduce the background more, and almost de-centralising it.

Green or not Green

Mark says - Different take on this month’s theme, but equally as valid. I’d have preferred the buildings lower down in the frame, so that they are on the lower third – just a tad too central at the moment.
I like the B&W treatment too – the sky is particularly good.

Iain says:- An interesting take on the theme, yet none the worst for that. A powerful image that encourages debate. And for that the photographer should be applauded. The conversion to monochrome gives the shot more impact too. Well done.

Green Power

Mark says -Shame it wasn’t the one that caught fire the other day!
Fits the theme, again in a different way to colour. I might have cropped it to have just the three on the right in the frame, as the others are a bit higgle-de piggle-de.
Nice B&W conversion and I like the steam rising.

Iain says:- My second. Taken when the mist was low and the turbines were above. Not my best shot I admit, but could be a talking point.

Green Rocks

Mark says - Like the idea, but it just isn’t sharp. Nice leading line through the image on the thirds.

Iain says:- I love the image composition, but the whole shot seems out of focus on my monitor, Sorry.

Orkney 2

Mark says - Different sort of angle to the house. Not sure it works in respect to drama though.

Iain says:- At first, a bit of a shapshot, but when you look into it more, it has a sense of scale. Bothy (is that what you call it?) is on a third, and great detail. A very nice shot.

The steeple in the Greenwood

Iain says - This one I like a lot. Love the central position of the steeple, really fits the theme well. Cracking.

Iain says:- Great colours and lots of detail in the image. However I feel the steeple is too central to have real impact. Maybe if it was on a third would improve the shot to a stunner.

Wet and Green

Mark says- Good macro as well as fitting the theme. Good and sharp, with good depth of field. Like the angle of the stem coming into the frame.

Iain says:- Nice detail in this shot, with the dew adding to the whole image. One thing I personally would to is to crop the left hand side so that the stem comes from the corner. Apart from that, well done.
