October 2011 Open Competiton Entries

Crits kindly done by Mark and Iain

3 Green Boxes

Mark Says - Great shot – like the angles to make it more interesting – texture is good. But bottom left – there is a label or something – and is mighty distracting!

Iain says - Interesting abstract with punchy colours. the cross line is even from a third to a third. One thing I have noticed is the label? in the bottom right. It does pull the eye a bit.

3 Lamp

Mark says - Not straight, not central and not in focus. Flat lighting. Have I missed anything?

Iain Says - the leaning lamp, not sure if that was intentional. colours seem muted and it does seem out of focus. Sorry.

After they've gone

Mark says - I am looking at this wondering if the horizon is straight – sos much so, that I had to open it in Photoshop to check – and I was right – about ½° or so out. And it does make all the difference!
There is also an optical illusion with the buildings reducing in size as the go out to sea.

Love the colours though, together with the shadows on the sand in the foreground.
I have to wonder, what it would look like, if the Pier was on the top third and the sand being the majority of bottom two thirds.

Iain Says - Nice colours in this, must have been taken during the golden hour. I like the way the pier draws the eye across the shot. One thing though, I would crop a bit of the bottom, so that the pier is on a third rather than close to centre. As it is, a pleasing shot.

At the crack of dawn

Mark says - I like this shot – the trig point is positioned nicely on the third – has a pleasant boarder. It does look as though the colour has been pushed a little too far in places – that or the foreground has been “filled” just a bit too much and noise is just starting to appear.
Still would print out well, I think and look good on the wall.

Iain Says - Cracking colours! the pathway draws you into the shot, with the triangulation point on a third. Could do well.

Buxton Spa Express

Mark says - Nice double headed pair of Black 5’s – bit of an overkill for a 9 or 10 coach train I’d have thought, but I bet the enthusiasts enjoyed it!

Iain Says - One of mine. I was chasing this all day, at Chapel in the morning and here in the afternoon. I had to wait for 2 1/2 hours for it to get here, but I think it was worth it.

Far above the streets and houses

Mark says - Nice snap shot of the rainbow. Bit of posterisation in the sky. Not much more to say really.

Iain says - Mine. It was a grab shot when I got home as you don't often see rainbows in Stockport.

Knot

Mark says - Simple subject which has been taken well, the three ropes coming from the sides culminating with the centre knot works well. The back ground is nicely out of focus to pull the viewer onto the subject with no distractions.
Well lit by the sun with some good texture.

Iain says:- Great control of DOF, lovely detail on the rope. A good shot.

Ladies who Lunch

Mark says - Quite a nice shot – good to see some humour in our photography.
I think it would have been better titled “Ladies Who Garden” or similar as there is no lunch, but there are flowers!
The photographers viewpoint is a little ordinary – may have worked better from a different angle.
A square crop may have also removed some of the extraneous clutter from the windows, but kept the fact that it is a shop.

Iain:- I like the concept, but the execution. For me the tog is too high up, maybe getting down more, or, even going to one side too, would have given the shot more impact. As it is, more of a snapshot. Sorry.

Lady by Candlelight

Mark says - As a portrait, I like it very much – the context makes the slightly hard light work well. The pose is flattering to both the model and the period (I would say!). The candle, as a major part of the subject, is a little too far out to the edge of the frame and doesn’t work so well.

Iain says - Not sure about this one. The light is good, and I like the candle in the foreground. But I think I would have preferred the subject to be looking at the camera, and possibly closer to the candle itself.

Morning Mist

Mark says - This is a cracking shot. One of my favourites this month. Love the colours and the mist adding depth to the image. Lots of layers. Brill. Would be fantastic on the wall, printed huge!

Iain says - Nice soft landscape, good balance and colours. Well worth getting up early for. Well done.

Pie Shop

Mark says - Took me a few seconds to work out the title – then the reference to Sweeney Tod kicked my brain cells into action!
A nice enough snap shot, but no real artist merit in it for me, I’m afraid.

Iain says - Humourous shot, but somehow misses being a great shot. Maybe if the photographer was straight on at the shop front, rather than at an angle would have given it more impact.

Red Kite 1

Mark says - The naming of shots should be unique in the competitions – otherwise how is it known which one to vote for?
A great shot though. Nice to see the tree in the background to give  a sense of belonging.
Smashing colours and marking.

Iain says - Great shot. good detail on the feathers and I like how the tree in the background fills up the space without interfearing with the bird. Could do well

Red Kite

Mark says - I love these birds – probable because they are now so common and are relatively easy to take – but not in this position! Its an absolute cracking shot.
It is slightly hot on my monitor around the head and could do with being recovered a little to tone it down slightly.

Iain says - Good shot, but the head seems a little blown out, with some of the detail lost as a resolt. The composition is good though

Ribblehead

Mark says - Another cracking shot – love the light, colour and subject! Would have been nice to have a steam train on the front, but diesel electrics are very popular.
If I was being super critical, it would have been nice to have been just a little higher up, so that you could see the path the train had come from.

Iain Says - Mine, from a viewpoint near the viaduct. Shame it was'nt a Steam loco, but this is all that there was for specials that day.

Sparks at Druids

Mark says - Another very nice action shot – with the sparks ticking the box! Very well panned – enough to make the ground blur and give the sense of motion.
Nice bright colours of the riders suit, contrast nicely with the black bike.
It is a very tight crop, but there seems to be just enough space around to work – probably because it is nicely balanced.

Iain Says:- Nice and sharp with a real sense of speed. Love the crop to put the rider/bike fully into the frame. Another that could do well.

Tornado GR4 Cad West

Mark says - I do like this shot, the vapour trail, heat haze, angle, all make the shot full of movement and action. It is a shame it is out of the direct sun, and I would have liked a little more room on the right for it to fly into – it is just a tad too tightly cropped.

A lot better than I have got from their though!

Iain says:- A cracker! Pin sharp, sense of movement, blurred background. If I was to nit pick, I would say I would have preferred more space in front of the aircraft. But considering how fast these things go, that is difficult. Could be a winner!

Waterfall

Mark Says - Water movement has been well taken, but other than that, it doesn’t do much for me, sorry. The foreground is un-interesting – you can’t see where the water is falling into – the fact that you can’t see where it is from is somehow less important.

Iain says - good detail and great movement. it is half way between the classic milky effect you get with a slow exposure and the freezing from a fast exposure. One thing I would do, is crop the bottom a bit as it does'nt add to the image. On the whole though a nice shot.
