This months theme is : Repeating Patterns

Di says :
The theme for August was repeating patterns. Patterns can be seen every day –but to photograph them, we need to be able to isolate them from everyday life.

A simple shot can show patterns that repeat, in a way that we are not used to seeing them. One example might be a pile of clothes pegs, all one colour – but then add one peg of a different colour to break it up.

Lead the Way
Di says : First shot – and it deals with patterns in an ideal way. The thing that makes it for me are the two rings break up the stripes. An excellent shot with good use of colour.
Flick says : Taken at Driffield Agricultural Show by my hubby so no comment.

Tracks
Di says : To be honest I’m not entirely sure what I am looking at here. It fits the theme perfectly and I like the shallow depth of field. Good focus towards the middle and back of the shot. Interesting is what this months competition is all about.
Flick says : The tracks of a tractor - a taken by my hubby so no comment

Strawberry Fields Forever
Di says : When I saw this shot as a thumbnail, I thought I was going to see a wind farm. It was a pleasant surprise to see something different when the shot was made bigger. Once again it fits the theme perfectly and it’s amazing that even the knots are nearly identical – but slightly different enough to make the photograph interesting. Should be up at the top of the voting in my opinion.
Flick says : Mine, No comment!

Plough your own furrow
Di says : Another good shot – showing part of a plough. Love the black and white patterns. I might have been tempted to crop out the red bar at the back of the shot, and just leave the red to the right of the photo though. I find that extra red just a little bit distracting.
Flick says : Mine, No comment!

Through a London pub window
Di says : Very imaginative shot. The pattern repeats in the circles of glass, and it’s great that the photographer spotted this. I refer you back to my general comments at the start – looking at things as we are not always used to seeing them. I really like this, and it could be a winner.

Flick says : Nice picture but, to be quite honest, it took me a while to see the 'repeating patterns', it’s an unusual photo with good patterns but it’s a shame there aren't more!

Well spotted

Kitchen Knife
Di says : Not sure which part of the knife this is – almost looks more like a file than a knife. However the focus is good, and depth of field excellent. The patterns are perfect, with a change half way through the shot. Well done.
Flick says : Kitchen Knife - I like this one, the patterns are definitely there to be seen (even though they are slightly distorted)

Station Roof
Di says : Repeating patterns in the girders and supports of the roof. Great exposure and focus. Fits the theme perfectly – well done.
Flick says : Another one that fits the theme well and the patterns are filling the whole photo. Good exposure and focus.

Windsor Wheel
Di says : I didn’t know there was a wheel at Windsor – competing with the London Eye I suppose. Good take on the theme though, all the carriages are the same, and the struts of the wheel make the pattern complete. You don’t have to see the full circle to know that it’s there. The photographer has given you enough information for you to fill in the blanks on your own. Great shot.
Flick says : Great photo taken from a really good angle, fits the theme
to a tee and the way it was cropped to add impact. My only critisism is it could have been cropped under the last cage. A very sharp, clear photo with a good background.

Ferns
Di says : My first entry, so no comment, other than to say that I stood underneath the plant to get the shot.
Flick says : A nice photo with fronds of different shapes and sizes, but there seems to be an unusual distortion at the bottom of the photo.

Drum
Di says : I think this is the drum of either a washing machine, or a tumble dryer. Great patterns, and the light has been captured well too. Not too much highlight, but a great shallow depth of field. Excellent.
Flick says : Definitely 'repeating patterns' but unfortunatley the photo is not entirely in focus. There is also a little to much reflection on the photo. Nice idea though!

Lighthouse
Di says : A plethora of repeating patterns in this shot, the tiles on the roof, the fence line, and the decorative pattern around the top of the tower. The colours balance well, and the focus is excellent. Another really good shot in keeping with this months theme. Well done.
Flick says : A lovely clear photo with a beautiful sky behind but my eye is drawn to the top of the lighthouse and the weather vane rather than the patterns on the lighthouse itself and also the railings.

Peacock
Di says : Brilliant colours here. I might just have been tempted to show only a part of the peacock tail, but that’s personal preference. These are ‘the’ most beautiful of birds – though rather noisy. Love this shot – love the blue on the birds breast.
Flick says : Such a vibrant photo, the colours are really strong but again my eye is drawn to the bird first.

Tread Carefully
Di says : Well – you would have to wouldn’t you? Great shot of the docks, and the repeat of the wooden structure to the front. Great exposure, and details in the wood come out wonderfully well. Fits the theme. What more can I say?
Flick says : A really nice pic, good colours and depth of field. The background is slightly distracting but there is definitely a 'repeating pattern' there! The wooden rails are perfectly in focus and there is a good depth of field.

Stairs
Di says : My second entry. Taken at Dunham Massey House – there were roof renovations going on, and we were allowed up the stairs to the roof, to see how they were getting on.
Flick says : A great photo that made me feel quite giddy looking down! The feet in the top right hand corner are slightly distracting but all in all its a good picture.

Spokes
Di says : Great use of colour here. I like the break in the pattern in the centre, where the shape turns into an egg. Brilliant patterns on the spokes. The only change I might have been tempted to make would have been to make the corners all even. So the amount of tyre showing was the same at each point. Great shot though.
Flick says : Excellent photo. Nice and clear with good bold colours. Nicely cropped, too!

Magic Mirror
Di says : This was an excellent idea. It’s good to have fresh views on theme competitions. I’m sure I recognise the chap with the camera…. .. Having said that – the patterns which repeat over and over – ad infinitum – are wonderful. A slightly tighter crop might have improved it even more.
Flick says : What an unusual idea! I had to look at it twice and I still can't decide just where the mirror is.

The Tour
Di says : This is the tour of Britain, taking place even as I type. It’s a cracking shot. Full of colour and life. The people applauding at the side of the road add to the effect. There are repeating patterns in the helmets, and in the jerseys, and in the cycles themselves. All in all - potentially a winner.. great shot.
Flick says : An excellent photo full of repeating patterns. A good colourful photo!

Wooden Box Lid
Di says : Brilliant. It’s like one of those pictures by M C Escher (Click here for website)
Just a terrific idea. I’ve nothing else to say.
Flick says : Well, this one definitely fits the theme and is an excellent photo.
