West |
| Jess says: Great reflection. I particularly like the cars in the parking lot. A stronger colour in the sky to bring out the building would have given this more impact. |
| Mark says:A good start to the theme competition!
I would have liked to have seen a more interesting sky and the building
perspective sorted out – it leans back too much. But it is a good example of the reflections theme this month, good effort. |
| It's
Me! |
| Jess says: Good imagination on this, very detailed reflection but perhaps the crop is a little too tight. |
| Mark says: Another good example, very nice idea which has been well done, Exposure is very good. I like the view over the shoulder too, the lighthouse is well placed to make the eye move around the shot. Just needs to sort out the grip on the lens ? and keep the eye open! (I can’t do this very well, so I’m one to talk!) |
| Kinsale
Dawn |
| Jess says: Once again a very good reflection, a rather busy image and a bit light in contrast. A stronger coloured sky would work wonders |
| Mark says:I would have liked a slightly lower viewpoint to emphasise the boat masts. Exposure is a little hot for me and my monitor, a 1/3 or ½ a stop may have increased the punch of the shot. |
| City
Hall (Toronto) |
| Jess says: Good reflection and nice contrast and colour, I think cropping out the building on the right side would have been a plus and the flag being in the center is a bit distracting |
| Mark says:Very well executed reflections, and
I also like the flag, adding a splash of colour. The building is slightly leaning both back and to the side. The back lean doesn’t bother me as much as the side to side one! Exposure is good. Well done. |
| Sauble
Beach |
| Jess says: Very nice image, good colour and contrast. The central horizon detracts a little but the pilings make for interest in a good composition. |
| Mark says:Nice sunset, with some good reflections in the sea from both the sun and the posts. The sun might have been a little better just slightly more onto the thirds and the sea is just leaning a little. |
| Salford
Quays |
| Jess says: Lovely image, great reflection and the exposure and colour are excellent. The only thing that bothers me is the overhanging building in the upper left that I find a little distracting |
| Mark says:Good effort, though a little too much
foreground is visible and not enough of the lovely reflection of the bridge
and building. Exposure is good though, with some good detail in the sky. |
| Grundslee
Reflections - WINNER |
| Jess says: Excellent composition and reflection. Colour and contrast I find a little flat but overall a fine image |
| Mark says:A well detailed shot, with good dynamic
range from the detail in the sky to the rock in the foreground. I also
like the depth of field. The water has provided a good foil for the reflection
of the boots masts, but has not been quite so effective with the mountains.
Perhaps a slightly different light would have enabled some more detail
to be seen. But a good effort all the same. |
| Which
way round? |
| Jess says: This image looks like it has had the sky changed; the reflection is blown but the sky is not or if it is upside down the clouds are blown. Good composition but I find the image a little confusing and without detail. |
| Mark says:And this is exactly the effect that
I was hoping to see in this competition. The quality of the reflection
is excellent – and has taken a few moments to work out which way
up the picture was taken! Excellent, has to be up the top of the list! |
| Glimpse
of home cuisine - THIRD |
| Jess says: Good imagination and a well executed photo but I think I would have cropped out the pot in the lower right corner. Nicely done. |
| Mark says:This is again a good shot, with a nice
reflection in the machine. Compositionally I would perhaps like to see
a little more of the kitchen. As it is the jar in the bottom right is
distracting – it should have either been moved or be in the picture. Still, I do like the reflection – but again, the one glass is not quite in view enough. |
| Reflecting
globe - SECOND |
| Jess says: This mine so I won’t comment |
| Mark says:Another excellent interpretation of
the theme. Nicely composed, with the flowers sat on the bottom thirds
giving the focal point to draw the ey back to when its finished running
around the rest of the image. The background blur is very nicely done,
providing a strong anchor for the globe to sit. This has also to be up there with the best. |
| Hatley
Park Gardens |
| Jess says: This mine so I won’t comment |
| Mark says: Back to a more traditional reflection in water, but none the worse for that. Lovely colours throughout the spot on exposed shot. |
| Branch
on Water |
| Jess says: Good composition but a bit soft. A little more contrast and saturation would have made a difference. |
| Mark says:My first thought when looking at this
shot, was that it was picture of the branch and its reflection, but in
fact there are reflections everywhere, not always distinct, but there
all the same. The image perhaps lacks some punch and is very green, with
just the brown branch providing a contrasting colour. Good effort. |
| Living
in glass houses |
| Jess says: Very good perspective on this, the reflection is clear and there is lots of interest in the image. Bottom right is a little overexposed but a good image. |
| Mark says:I like the sweeping bend of the wall/edge of the building, although it’s a little burnt out in places. It does add a sense of mystery. The reflection in the buildings nicely done, with plenty of action. |
| Double
Reflection |
| Jess says: Rare sight to see a double rainbow so clear. Good colour and saturation though the first rainbow looks a bit pixilated. Good interpretation of the theme. |
| Mark says:An interesting take on the theme and one that has also been well executed. The rainbows are positioned off-centre and provide a leading line across the image to hold the eye into the scene. |
| Swan
Lake |
| Jess says: Nicely proportioned image, clear reflection of swan and reeds. Background is a little dark but otherwise a good image. |
| Mark says:A well composed, and exposed shot of the swan, which is sitting in the thirds and has a good amount of space in which to swim. The reflection of the swan is generally crisp, although to nit-pick the reflected head is a little lost in the brown reeds also reflected into the water. |
| Crystal Clear |
| Jess says: Excellent interpretation of the theme, good composition and light and exposure well executed. I think I would have tried to straighten the perspective a bit as the mirror frame does run off at the sides. Well done. |
| Mark says:A perhaps slightly obvious take on the
theme – but well done. It might have been improved slightly if the
perspective had been corrected and the edges of the mirror being vertical. I’m trying to work out if the space behind the centre of the chandelier is another mirror – or just a door! |
| Symphony
Hall |
| Jess says: Again good interpretation of the theme nicely exposed and clear. I might have cropped just a bit from the top just to emphasize the reflection. |
| Mark says:My first. |
| An
eye for an eye |
| Jess says: I like the idea of this for the theme but find the image a bit soft possibly taken too close to the subject. A slightly larger view of the eye might have been better. Good imagination. |
| Mark says:I’m not sure I would have liked to have got that close to the horses eyeball! Definitely a different shot, which mostly works for me. I would have perhaps liked to have seen the reflection in a little more detail. |
| A
girls best friend |
| Jess says: Again good idea for the theme, perhaps a little better lighting to bring out the sparkle and reflections of the diamonds would have just given this image a extra lift. |
| Mark says:This is another interesting take on
the theme – and whilst different, is certainly in keeping! I think this would have benefited from being perfectly symmetrical – it’s not quite there – the left side should have been cropped like the right side. Good effort. |
| Apples |
| Jess says: Well thought out subject. Excellent colour and exposure. Simple composition that works well. |
| Mark says:My Second. |
| Bargain
Castle |
| Jess says: Interesting composition, the reflection works well with the items in the window ghosting into the castle reflection. Well seen and taken. |
| Mark says:First impressions are that I like this
shot – good to see some humour in the competition. On second viewing, whilst the humour never leaves me, in some ways it’s unfortunate that the manikin can be seen through the window as the eye does keep being drawn to it. But it’s a good capture and I do like it. |
| Perfume
shop ceiling |
| Jess says: Interesting composition, perhaps needs a bit of straightening and I would have liked a little more of the subject to balance the reflection. Well done. |
| Mark says:I’m a little lost for words with
this one! Its very busy and I’m not sure if that’s a good
or bad thing! The wall to ceiling join is in need of being straightened. There is a strong white – not straight – line running through the shot which is a shame. Perhaps if the photographer had moved a little farther along it may have been a cleaner shot. |
