Late Autumn - WINNER
Mark Says
I love the colours in this shot as well as the light falling diagonally across the image. Very well exposed. Excellent start! Well done.
Steamy says:
Like this one. No mistaking that it is Autumn, lovely russets & browns.
Like the light and shade coming in from the left. Good perspective and depth with the monument as a focal point, and the sky adds contrast.

Canel Side
Mark Says
This one is mine. I just liked it!
Steamy says:
Not sure where the focal point is, whether it is the ferns or the point where the canal disappears around the bend .Feel the ferns overpower things a bit. You can feel the tranquil quality strongly and it does make you want to be there.

Canel Walk
Mark Says
My second one. I like the way the canal leads the eye around the corner. The tree on the right is on the thirds too, as is the walker on the left (Jane my wife!)
Steamy says:
Very reminiscent of a Constable landscape painting and they were extremely good. So is this photograph. Good perspective on the hedge, towpath and canal leads the eye round to focus on the tree. Nicely composed landscape – but who is Catherine de Barnes.

As the sun goes down - THIRD

Mark Says
Well taken sky, but I would have liked just a little more of the trees in shot to balance it better.
Steamy says:
Beautiful sky on this one. Makes you feel it could be the end of a long hot day. The cloud formation funnels the eye to the tree and the tree back to the clouds. Works both ways.

Humber Bridge
Mark Says
Not sure about this one. I’m not sure I like the way the bridge isn’t attached to anything on the left. Just sort of hangs there. A little bit central too. The eye does follow the bridge back and forth, but has no real focal point apart from the centre tower.
Steamy says:
A good shot. Would like to know what time of day it was taken. The
bridge column is a good focal point and leads the eye to the faraway shore which gives depth. Shame all the bridge could not be featured
but it is a long bridge

Fresh Rose
Mark Says
Lighting is perhaps just a little harsh and is casting some pretty hard shadows, but is other than that well taken.
Steamy says:
For this to work for me I feel it needs to be a little sharper in focus, which would treat the moisture drops on the petals better. There is a good contrast with the background.

Two Tone Carnation

Mark Says
The high light at the top left is a little blown. Probably would have helped to have had a frame around the picture, just to define the edges better. It probably looks better on the gallery, where it will be sat in a frame.
Steamy says:
Good contrasting colours gives it impact and for me better focus. Feel it is rather disadvantaged by the white section in the top left hand corner.

Bird Food
Mark Says
Interesting shot, exposure is balanced between the foreground and background and the berries are lying on the thirds and provide a strong anchor to the rest of the shot.
Steamy says:
Cannot comment as this is mine.

A thorny issue
Mark Says
Good subject, but I think the background is distracting. I like the way the light highlights the spines.
Steamy says:
Like the way the light picks out the prickles on the cacti. Bit unsure about a focal point. My eye wanders about a bit. Perhaps more could be made of the flower in the top centre.

An Informal Moment
Mark Says
A good candid. Nicely composed. The orange strips compete a bit with the Queens hat, which could be dealt with in post if so inclined!
Steamy says:
Like this one. A good natural relaxed portrait. The photographer must have felt the centre of attention. Good layered depth, Queen 1st, Philip 2nd and bystanders 3rd. Like the lady photographer taking a picture of the back of Phillips head! Good use of depth of field.

Untitled
Mark Says
I’m not sure if this is a night shot or has been treated in some way. It doesn’t do much for me sorry.
Steamy says:
The black and white treatment just suits this brooding and somewhat forbidding picture. The dark lakeside areas enhance the mysterious quality of the lake . Shades of Lady of the Lake and Excalibur. Feel the wall in the bottom left hand diminishes the atmosphere a bit. Lets reality back in. Could have been cloned out.

Sudbury Hall
Mark Says
Good shot showing the grandeur of the Hall in its grounds. The central horizontal composition of the building has worked with the building and horizon sitting on the vertical 1/3.
Steamy says:
Focal point is definitely the house. Perhaps there is too much sky and grass., and a closer treatment of the house would reveal the wonderful brickwork. Good depth though and I like the flanking trees.

Waterfall
Mark Says
Good looking waterfall, but I do feel that the yellow bush is competing for the viewers’ attention. A couple of feet to the left may have improved things.
Other than that, the sense of rapid movement of the water is apparent with the relatively high shutter speed.
Steamy says:
The water is so good and highlights the bridge. Not too certain about the yellow tree on the side. I find it rather distracting. It tends to become the focal point instead of for me the top of the waterfall.

Ring-bill Gull
Mark Says
Super sharp shot of the gull, well exposed with a nice rim lighting on the wing tips. Good amount of space for the bird to fly into. Background is nicely out of focus.
Good effort.
Steamy says:
Love this. This type of photograph is so so difficult to do well, and this is really well done. Excellent . Perhaps just a shade cropped off the right hand side.

Becher Bay
Mark Says
Well composed shot of the bay. The land is nicely positioned within the composition with the hills hazy in the background.
Steamy says:
Love the ethereal quality of the mountains and sky with the mist at the foot of them, and the two leaning trees. I tend to lose interest a bit with the right hand third of the picture.

Evening Sky
Mark Says
Slightly dark for me, with the sunset not really providing any drama. A half or even full stop more exposure and then some additional saturation may have helped.
Good effort though.
Steamy says:
Afraid I have to say it …. a picture of two halves.. The sky is brilliant full of luminous quality, but is sadly let down by the lower half. I feel cropping a bit would increase the impact without the without affecting the quality

Autumn in Beresford Dale by the River Dove
Mark Says
Interesting shot of a wood, but has no real focal point for the eye to return to, instead I find my eye just wondering around aimlessly.
Good colours and exposure though.
Steamy says
Cannot comment as this is mine

Beach Huts at Bridlington - SECOND
Mark Says
I like this shot, the repeating, diminishing patterns of the huts really works well. Exposure is spot on. Excellent. Well done.
The only really picky criticism, is the first door is different to the rest, but I didn’t notice it at first.
One of my favourites!
Steamy says:
I am a lover of perspective and this picture does it justice. It is unusual and good, with the colours for me just right.. The eye is drawn unerringly to the focal point and I particularly like the door handles. Perhaps an idea would be a figure in silhouette at the focal point itself.

The Skaters
Mark Says
The title is perhaps not the best as the skaters are really only a small part of the Christmas scene.
That said, the tree provides a good focal point, but I do find the string of lights a bit distracting.
Steamy says:
This is excellent. It is the closest I have seen to a Lowry painting in a photograph. Each office window is a picture in its own right, and there is interest everywhere. Well done.

Cranes on a blue sky
Mark Says
Interesting abstract. Just a little under exposed, with the detail on the cranes not quite visible. A polarising filter, if not used, may have darkened the sky without darkening the cranes.
Steamy says:
Good geometrics on the subject and technically a well taken photograph, against a complimentary sky. But does not really work for me however.
