Mark says: Interesting shot of the sunset. I’m not sure about the dark foreground, although it does provide an anchor. The flare is nicely done and doesn’t look too forced. |
| Iain says: Great colours love the light streaks on it. The focal point is the sky, rather than having something “sort of” in the foreground. Should do well. |
|
|
Autumn Sunrise |
Mark says: The position of the three vertical poles on the left 3rd and the birds on the right 3rd aids the composition. The different layers caused by the mist is well captured but the mist is a bit too strong for me overall; making the image just a little too hazy. |
| Iain says: Not keen on this I am afraid. There is no focal point and the mist overpowers the image too much. Also, not keen on the colours, seems unnatural. |
|
![]() |
Urban Sunrise |
Mark says: The early morning sunrise has been caught well in this shot, with the frost on the ground emphasizing the cold. The colour on the machines is wonderful. |
| Iain says: Like the idea, but the fence on the front interferes a bit. Nice colours though. |
|
![]() |
sheep in the morning mist |
Mark says: A little too much mist again for me. The top of the image just disappears into the rest of the webpage – just a simple line to define the edge would help. |
| Iain says: Sorry does’nt do it for me, I think the image was taken too late after the sunrise, the rich liquid colours of that time in the morning are lost. Maybe if the image was taken from a lower perspective, it might have worked better. |
|
![]() |
kettering dawn |
Mark says: I like this shot, the tree on the left works well for me, providing the source of the branches. Whether it really meets the theme is open to debate. |
| Iain says: Again, taken a bit too late to take advantage of the early morning light. I like the mist and composition though. |
|
![]() |
Steaking Sunset |
Mark says: A good silhouette of the bare trees. Nice colours and the aircraft trail fills the top left well. Good colours. |
| Iain says: Nice colours, I like the uniformity of the trees, and the added interest of the streak in the sky. Another that should do well |
|
![]() |
Farne View |
Mark says: Another good shot with the sunlight reflecting in the waters edge. Horizontal waters edge and well composed on the 3rds. |
| Iain says: Another example of great colours in the sky. Great reflections as well. Another that should do well |
|
![]() |
Bamburgh Dawn |
Mark says: Excellent sky and a nicely silhouetted caste. Composition is good with the castle on the thirds. |
| Iain says: Excellent sky, great point of interest, well composed. Should do well |
|
![]() |
Barcelona Sunset |
Mark says: My first. Taken whilst at work! Unfortunately taken through glass which has resulted in a couple of reflections from the interior lights and the flare in the centre is a shame. |
| Iain says: Again seems to be hdr, Like the other image, great sky, but a bit of flare, and the colours seem a little unnatural. Maybe I should look into this hdr more, to appreciate it. |
|
![]() |
Harbour Sunset |
Mark says: One of my favourites. Strong diagonal line of the boat leads the eye to the shore line and is then brought back up through the sun. Well done. |
| Iain says: Love the colours, quite surreal but I can tell it is HDR. Also the boat seems oddly shaped and dominates the image too much. Might do well. |
|
![]() |
Sunrise at Lowestoft |
Mark says: There is a little too much foreground and the horizon is a little too much in the centre of the frame. The diagonals of the groins work well. |
| Iain says: Great colours, good use of perspective with the groynes going out to sea. Love it. |
|
Fiery sky |
Mark says: Lovely colours through the trees. No real focal point though. |
| Iain says: Love the colours in the sky, but the trees seem a bit fussy. If it was one type of tree, then the image would improve. |
|
![]() |
Gun on Carlton Hill |
Mark says: The shadows on the gun pick out the detail well, with the remaining background in silhouette to provide some interest that is not overpowering. |
| Iain says: Again, great capture of the sky. However I think it is a bit too tightly zoomed into the canon. The canon overpowers the image somewhat. If the image was a little wider, so the canon does not dominate, the picture would be more balanced. A good effort though |
|
![]() |
Cardiff Sunrise ! |
| Mark says: Slightly oversaturated for me, but a good effort none the less. A little more of the city in the foreground would be nice – with the street lights a little more prominent |
| Iain says: Great colours again, but the end of the house, interferes a little for me. The white of the roof catches the eye a bit too much. |
|
Sunset over Taransay. Western Isles |
Mark says: The foreground is not assisting this image – I would have liked a viewpoint on the beach itself and had the reflection of the sunset as the foreground. Bit too much normal blue sky at the top of the frame. Had the makings of an excellent shot. |
| Iain says: Another Cracking image. One minor thing, it is a shame that the high sky is a little bleached. Apart from that, a belter, should do well. |
|
![]() |
| Sunrise over the Bristol Channel |
| Mark says: Dramatic sky, although a bit over saturated again |
| Iain says: Another good capture of the colours in the sky. Well taken |
|
Lights Out. |
Mark says: I like this shot – the slightly washy sky and haze over the foreground gives it depth. The colours are not too strong either. |
| Iain says: Great colours, great sun, reminds me of the sunsets in the Western Desert in Egypt. Again should do well. |
|
Evensong
- Joint Winner
|
Mark says: I like this image too. The sun between the trees and the reflection on the path is excellent. Again some good use of layers in the image to give depth. |
| Iain says: Love it, the composition and colours are spot on. Love the way the photographer has put the sun through the trees. Again this should do well. |
|
![]() |
Indian sunset |
| Mark says: Level horizon, umbrella (?) just offset from the centre, which I like. Good colours running up from the bottom to the top. Good effort |
| Iain says: Again like the previous image, beautiful colours let down by the parasol overpowering the image. If the photographer zoomed out a little, reducing the impact of the silhouette, then the image would be spot on. |
|
![]() |
Jodrel Bank at sunset |
Mark says: Lovely silhouette of the dishes. Super colours. Good composition. |
| Iain says: Again lovely sky, but the foreground is a bit fussy for me. I would have preferred just the Lovell telescope as the silhouette, this would have given the image more impact. |
|
![]() |
Kefalonian Sunrise |
Mark says: Another good shot, Sun is nicely positioned both in the frame and behind the cloud. Just enough detail in the foreground to make it interesting without being overpowering. |
| Iain says: Another one of mine, this was taken about 7am, I got up, got the tripod and camera ready on the balcony of the apartment, waited for the right moment, took the shot, and went back to bed. |
|
![]() |
Dawn |
Mark says: The steps lead into the picture – again good composition. Over hanging tree is filling an otherwise empty corner. Just a hint of colour in the sky by the horizon. I do like this one. |
| Iain says: Nice composition, the railings really draw you into the picture. Again, the colours in the sky seem to be a little lost. A good effort though. |
|
Norwich sorting office |
Mark says: Clouds have a nice formation, running in a diagonal taking the eye from top left towards the building. My eye is drawn to the windows and the yellow sky. |
| Iain says:
Nice colours in the sky. But the sorting office seems to be cut off. Either have the building on the shot, or not, rather than a sort of. |
|
![]() |
Ocean Sunset |
Mark says: Good to see another straight horizon. The boat is a nice touch and makes the picture. Looks a little over saturated, but may have been as shot. |
| Iain says: Another good image, Like the way the boat has silhouetted, Nice colours, almost surreal. If I had one criticism, I would say that the boat could be a little further to the right. Apart from that, and excellent shot |
|
![]() |
Sunset from Cromarty |
Mark says: The rig is just a little out of position for me – but the shore line draws the eye across well. |
| Iain says: Nice composition, the colours are good too. The image seems a little soft though. |
|
![]() |
Sunset on the Solway |
| Mark says: The reflection across the sea is nice in an otherwise fairly bland shot. Taking most of the dark clouds at the top improves it I think |
| Iain says:
Again, the colours are a little lost, If the speed was increased by ½ a stop, the colours might be brought in some more. Like the composition though. |
|
![]() |
Sail in the sunset |
Mark says: Not sure I like the rails. And the sail is a little small in the frame. |
| Iain says: Hmm, the barrier interferes too much for me, and the sail surfer appears to be lost. Only after enlarging the image you realise the sail is not dust. The sky is good though, was the photographer undecided on what to have in the picture? Maybe if the image was in portrait with the sail more in the picture, but keeping the sky above, might have given it more impact. |
|
![]() |
Chasing the clouds |
Mark says: Putting the sun in the centre of the frame doesn’t work for me – but the sky itself is fabulous! |
| Iain says: Again the sky seems to be a little washed out. If the photographer increased the speed by say 1/2 stop, the colours would be a little richer. Good effort though. |
|
![]() |
Solva Sunset |
Mark says: Sorry, doesn’t do it for me. I think its the square building on the right. |
| Iain says: Love the sky (we have a lot of excellent skies here) but not keen on the foreground, especially the house to the right. |
|
![]() |
Going home |
Mark says: The bridge has been cropped too tightly – I guess the photographer has concentrated on the boat and not enough thought to the edges of the frame. Sky at the top is a very drab – but does have some colour. |
| Iain says: Not sure about this one, the barrier on the right interferes too much, and the sky seems a bit washed out. Like the idea of the boat going out to sea though. |
|
![]() |
Sunrise Over Katelios |
Mark says: Nice composition – split into three pretty much on the thirds, with the boat on the intersection of the thirds and the sun pretty much on the opposite one. Bit of posterising of the sky but that may be due to compression. |
| Iain says: One of mine. Taken about 7am in Kefalonia, Only me and a couple of cats seeing the sunrise at the beach. |
|
![]() |
Sunrise Farm |
Mark says: Some nice levels giving depth to the shot. It’s not bad. |
| Iain says: I like the sun coming up, but the rest of the image seems a little hazy for me. Good composition though. |
|
![]() |
Sunset over Lowick |
| Mark says: The bright spots in the sky spoil this shot for me. A ND grad filter to hold the exposure of the sky compared to the foreground might have help – that or blend two or three exposures to even the exposure. |
| Iain says:
Nice colours, I like the way the trees don’t overpower the image, they trail off well. Also like the panorama as well. Again should do well |
|
![]() |
Sunset |
| Mark says: Although I think the colours have been enhanced a lot in post, I do like the result. |
| Iain says:
Lovely Colours of a fiery sky. Nice use of the trees in the foreground to give it depth. Should do well |
|
Sunset at Lowick Northumberland 1 |
Mark says: I can’t decide about this image. Is it the sunset or the trees that the photographer was taking? I can’t see a focal point. |
| Iain says: Not sure about this, the sky is good, but the image doesn’t say anything. If the trees went away at an angle to give it perspective and depth, It would work better. |
|
Sunset at Lowick Northumberland 2 |
Mark says: This is a better effort, by the same photographer. I would have had the tree just a bit further across the frame. |
| Iain says: Nice composition, but the sky seems a little light. Again ½ stop would work wonders. |
|
![]() |
Sunset in the lake district |
Mark says: The foreground looks to be out of focus – that or movement during the exposure. |
| Iain says: Lovely sky, but the foreground is blurred. Was a tripod and high F stop used? Might solve the problem. |
|
![]() |
Sunset in Barcelona |
| Mark says: My second. Nothing special – the reflection in the bottom left is annoying - as is the double exposure of the bus at the bottom. Nice sky though |
| Iain says: It seems another HDR, as the colours seem unnatural. Love the Sky though. But the flare in the bottom right interferes too much for me. |
|
![]() |
Clock's saying sunset |
Mark says: Nice idea – something different. Good composition and colours. |
| Iain says: Again lovely colours and composition, If I had one criticism, I would say the bottom right could have been filled with the clocks as well. Again could do well. |
|
![]() |
Whitesands Beach Sunset
- Joint Winner
|
Mark says: Super colours. Looks like a filter ones used. Sea breaking on the shore gives some foreground interest. Horizon is just off horizontal I think. |
| Iain says: Again, great colours, just a shame the sun appears to be cut off at the top. Would have worked better in portrait. Great sea though |
